Police probing a sex attack on a woman in the centre of Aberdeen charged a man last night.
The victim was targeted in Union Terrace Gardens early yesterday morning.
Police sealed-off the Victorian park as they launched their investigation into the incident.
It happened two months after a woman was raped at Union Terrace Gardens.
The culprit has not been caught.
Police said last night that a 26-year-old man had been charged in connection with yesterday morning’s assault, which happened around 4am.
Throughout the day yesterday police could be seen guarding the four entrances to the gardens as specialist investigators wearing white forensic suits examined a taped-off area at one of the arches below Union Terrace.
While officers were at the scene they spotted a man wearing jeans, a blue hoodie and white headphones hiding behind a grassy verge.
He could be seen being spoken to by an officer beside the stairs leading down from Union Terrace for around 40 minutes.
Just before 1pm, he was led into the back of an unmarked police car.
It is not yet known if the man has any connection to the incident.
Union Terrace Gardens was cordoned-off on January 28 after a 21-year-old woman was raped.
Police are still hunting for her attacker, but despite releasing CCTV images of someone caught on camera walking along the Lower Denburn around the time of the incident no one has been charged.
City centre councillor Bill Cormie said he believed the incidents highlighted a need for better security at the gardens.
Councillor Cormie said: “It’s very sad to hear that another incident has happened down there.
“I think that it’s time that the council reconsiders its stance now, and lock the gates as they used to be.
“There’s nothing there for folk at night to see really, it’s a garden, there are no floral displays to see when it’s pitch black, and the arches aren’t really the best place for folk to congregate.
“It’s attracting the wrong sort of people.
“I’ll certainly be speaking to officers about looking into locking the gates as we did in the past.”
A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland can confirm they were investigating a sexual assault today that occurred within Union Terrace Gardens during the early hours of Sunday, March 27.
“As a result a 26 year old man has been charged and is being reported to the procurator fiscal.”
