Dons fans have paid heart-warming tributes to two die-hard fans at today’s home game against Hamilton – after they both lost their battles with cancer.

Section Q of the South Stand at Pittodrie was set aside as a dedicated singing section for 16-year-old James Stewart today, who lost his battle with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer.

A banner reading “forever by our side James Stewart” was raised earlier during the Dons’ clash with Hamilton – with the Reds currently up 3-0.

A minute’s applause was scheduled to take place during the 16th minute of the game and fans were asked to sing “There’s only one James Stewart”.

The family of the Culter teen said his fight against the disease had been “inspirational”.

The Cults Academy pupil was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in April last year when he was aged 15.

Parents Sandra and Alec said the Dons fanatic had stayed in good spirits throughout his illness, which included hours spent receiving treatment at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital.

During Aberdeen FC’s clash between Aberdeen and Motherwell in March, both sets of fans also took part in a 16th minute round of applause in memory of James.

Another banner was displayed for Michael McCartney, 51, another Dons fanatic from Peterhead who lost his cancer battle in March.

He had told the family the one thing he wanted to do before he died was see a Dons match from the comfort of a box seat, which his family arranged for him in January.

A banner reading “stand free Michael McCartney” was held up by fans during the match.
