It was a normal working day for Aberdeen man Rob Gibb when he was suddenly faced with a situation which would have filled many people with panic.
The security guard was carrying out his normal duties at the city’s Union Square when a fight broke out nearby.
One man was so badly hurt in the fracas that he collapsed and stopped breathing.
Realising there was not enough time to wait for the emergency services, the quick-thinking 22-year-old rushed to help the injured man and managed to revive him by performing CPR.
Just a few weeks later, Mr Gibb, who is employed by security firm, VSG, had to spring into action to help a customer who was choking in one of the centre’s restaurants, and prevented them from sustaining any serious injuries.
As a result of his life-saving interventions, he was recently given the Outstanding Act award at the British Security Industry Association’s regional personnel awards.
However, Mr Gibb was quick to play down his heroic antics as just another feature of his working day.
And he admitted to being stunned when he found out he was in line for an award.
He said: “I am extremely surprised and flattered to have won this award. I was just doing my job and I am really honoured that my work has been recognised.”
Mr Gibb is well-respected by his colleagues and regular customers for his first-aid skills and customer service.
Ryan Manson, general manager of Union Square, said: “The safety and wellbeing of our customers always remains our number one priority and this well-deserved award reflects the high standards set by the security team here at Union Square. We are delighted that Rob’s actions have been recognised by the British Security Industry Association.”
He will now be put forward for the national awards and, if he makes it through the second round, will be presented with the honour at the organisation’s annual lunch in July.
