An internationally renowned composer from Aberdeen whose music has been performed for the Royal Family and the Pope will help celebrate the 70th anniversary of a north-east singing society.
Professor Paul Mealor was first launched into stardom when his motet Ubi Caritas was performed by the choirs of Westminster Abbey and Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal and the wedding of Prince William and Katherine Middleton in April 2011.
On the wedding day, Prof Mealor’s music was heard by 2.5 billion people around the world – one of the largest audiences in broadcasting history.
Last year, his music was performed for His Holiness himself when Pope Francis toured America.
And now, the composer will be hosting a special workshop to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Aberdeen Choral Society.
Originally formed in 1946, the group currently has around 80 members from all walks of life.
Choirs from around the north-east have been invited to the workshop on April 23 at Albyn School, where Professor Mealor will rehearse the classic Faure’s Requiem and lead the first Scottish performance of his new composition Jubilate Deo.
The day will culminate with a concert at 6pm for the benefit of all the participants and their families and friends.
Prof Mealor said: “I’m delighted to be celebrating this milestone for the wonderful Aberdeen Choral Society with a day examining one of the greatest works in the choral repertoire, Faure’s beautiful Requiem.
“Every time I perform this work, it reveals new secrets to me both musical and spiritual.”
Graham Mountford, who has been the society’s honorary secretary for the last 30 years, said the event isn’t just for those with a background in choirs.
He added: “Experienced singers will enjoy the event, but it is also an opportunity for those considering joining the choir to have a taste of choral singing – and an opportunity to work with Paul Mealor”.
The event is by invitation. A donation of £10 is requested for the full day with refreshments provided, and a donation of £5 is requested for those attending the concert only.
