A video shows the moment spectators watching a vicious school punch-up realise one of the fighters is carrying a knife.
The clip shows two boys brawling in the street outside Turriff Academy.
As the scrap escalates pupils gather around to watch and cars can be seen honking in alarm at the scene unfolding in the middle of the road.
The clothing of one of the boys is then pulled up to reveal what appears to be the handle of a knife tucked into the waistband of his trousers.
Onlookers shout “He’s got a knife” and both boys seem to freeze. An adult appears in the closing seconds of the clip to break up the fight but the boy with the knife appears to make off without being caught.
The scene was filmed in Victoria Terrace, outside Turriff Academy in April last year – just just six months before Bailey Gwynne was killed at Cults Academy.
As the 30 second opens many students can be seen gathered around wearing the Turriff Academy uniform as buses queue by the school in the background.
One person can be heard to say “It’s safe” whilst another adds “We can legally do it now”.
It is thought that the students are referring to the fact that the fight is set to take place outside of school grounds – away from the watchful eyes of teachers.
Then a fight breaks out – with a boy in a blue hoodie and tracksuit bottoms appearing to land the first set of blows against a pupil dressed in uniform.
The pair grapple in the street, before the uniformed boy manages to throw the other into a metal fence at the side of the road. He then pins him down, holding his shirt in order to land blows against him.
But in the process the other boy’s shirt is lifted up, and onlookers can be heard exclaiming “He’s got a knife” as cars honk at the scene.
And as the pair swing around what does appear to be the handle of a knife can be seen sticking out of the band of the trousers of the boy with the blue hoodie.
The revelation that a knife is involved in the fight seems to momentarily stun both boys – as they freeze in place.
And thankfully in the closing seconds of the clip an adult can be seen walking into the frame – with the fight breaking up.
But as the clip closes it appears that the boy in the blue hoodie is pulling his top back over the knife, to conceal it again, before making off without being detained.
