An historic Aberdeen mansion, which has been frequently targeted by vandals and fire-raisers could rise from the ashes and be redeveloped into new homes if plans are approved.
Granite-clad Kepplestone House, in the city’s prosperous west end, was engulfed in flames in October 2014, completely destroying sections of the listed property’s roof.
Six fire engines, a water carrier and a height vehicle were sent to the 19th century home.
Nobody was injured in the incident and three schoolboys were charged with wilful fireraising.
The home was built by local granite merchant Alexander McDonald.
A planning application was launched by Stewart Milne Homes last July to demolish part of the building, extend it and convert it into four homes and seven flats.
The north-east housing giant owns a large estate nearby and the application is expected to be discussed this month.
The plans have been met with a mixed reaction from Viewfield Road residents with some saying the fire-ravaged building is “an eyesore”, but others arguing that listed buildings should be preserved.
Jean Cordiner said: “I remember the fire – it was huge and we were terrified that sparks could land on our house.
“But it’s a beautiful old building and I don’t think they should do anything to make it look too modern.”
However, Gail Tawsc said: “Well it’s just an eyesore right now, isn’t it? Since the fire.”
Craigiebuckler and Seafield Community Council have also objected to the plans.
Local councillor Martin Greig said that the house had long been a matter of concern for nearby residents.
He said: “Local people have been concerned for many years about the future of the house.
“It was intended to be a major heritage development that would add to the cultural quality of the area.
“Residents are very angry that the building was left abandoned for so many years and it has been very difficult to get Stewart Milne to proceed with developing the mansion as originally planned.
“The community was totally stunned by the fire and they fear it may happen again.”
A Stewart Milne spokeswoman said: “The plan is to create four high-quality homes and seven premium apartments on the site, thus creating a brand new community and further enhancing the look and appeal of the area.
“The application is due to be heard at the April planning committee.”
