A campaign to scrap a controversial £2 drop off charge at Aberdeen Airport has attracted hundreds of signatures.
Liberal Democrat councillors, Martin Greig and Ian Yuill, launched the petition on Sunday, describing the fee imposed on drivers as “unwarranted and unfair”.
By last night, more than 1,650 people had signed the petition and Mr Yuill hailed the response, thanking those who had offered their support.
He said: “It’s showing no signs of slowing down. This is a phenomenal response, it has been running since late Sunday, so it is still less than three days.
“To get that level of response shows how angry people are at having to pay a toll to deliver people to the airport and that strikes people as unfair and I can absolutely understand.
“I think the airport is wrong to impose the charge and the sooner they drop it the better.”
The airport has defended the rise in the fee as part of a major upgrade of facilities in the coming months.
A spokeswoman for Aberdeen International Airport, said: “We are increasing the length of stay in the drop-off zone from 10 to 15 minutes and the fee will increase from £1 to £2.
“Customers can now park in the short-stay car park for 20 minutes at the same price and a free drop-off area is still available in the long-stay car park.
“Importantly, there will be no change for blue badge holders.”
She said the drop-off charge was brought in to ease congestion and manage traffic flow.
And she added: “Over the coming weeks and as part of our £20million investment programme, there will be a significant increase in construction traffic using our lower forecourt.
“This will significantly reduce capacity in this area and we will be encouraging passengers to use the car park.
“These measures will allow us to continue to provide a safe environment for passengers and all our customers during this time and beyond.”
