A host of classic cars will descend upon a north-east park this weekend as part of an annual Drive It Day event.
Aden Country Park will be overrun with motors when the Garioch Vehicle Restoration Society pull up at the popular Mintlaw attraction on Sunday to recognise the 1,000 mile journey 64 drivers set off on more than 100 years ago.
Drive It Day was created to remember the Royal Automobile Club’s Thousand Mile Trial which started in London on April 23, 1900, and passed through Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester – travelled through Scotland – then passed back through more English locations until motorists were back in London again.
The journey took almost three weeks to complete with only 46 vehicles making it to the finishing line.
On a smaller scale, this Sunday’s event will take owners of classic cars through Aberdeen, Pitmedden, Tarves, Methlick, New Deer and Maud before they arrive at Aden Country Park where the proud drivers will be able to show off their vehicles in the park’s courtyard.
Last night, Linda Bolger of Friends of Aden, which has endorsed the event, said: “This is a new event for Aden Country Park so we hope the weather is kind and people come and enjoy the rare opportunity of seeing a wide range of vintage and classic cars in the park.”
The event is free to attend and the park will operate as normal.
Due to ongoing works at the attraction, however, access to the farming museum is limited.
A major classic car event has been organised to take place later this year in Fraserburgh, when thousands of people are expected to flock to the north-east from around the UK.
The 25th annual Fraserburgh Vintage Car Rally will be held at the town’s leisure centre on Sunday, June 5.
