The row over the future of Aberdeenshire’s most beautiful landscapes could continue this week as councillors turn their attention to the Deveron Valley.
The local authority is in the midst of a public consultation on the region’s designated “special landscapes” – areas of outstanding natural beauty and significance which are given special protections.
But the planning team’s proposals have proved controversial and councillors in the Buchan area have demanded one of the north-east’s most recognisable landmarks be reconsidered.
Mormond Hill, near Strichen, can be seen throughout the area but members of the local area committee were told its cultural significance is not enough to extend planning protections.
Now members of the neighbouring Formartine area committee will consider the special landscapes policy in their own wards.
In a report to the councillors, planning boss Piers Blaxter says that developments in special landscape areas must not “significantly erode” the character of the surroundings.
“In the Formartine area, the north-east Aberdeenshire coast has been identified as a special landscape area, in recognition of the panoramic views over accessible coast, and the special character of the coastal settlements,” Mr Blaxter says.
“The supplementary guidance requires development to respect these features and maintain the integrity of the coastal settlements through appropriate siting and design.”
The Deveron Valley area west of Turriff has also been proposed as an area worthy of planning protections. Mr Blaxter suggests any construction in the valley be keep to the lower slopes.
This has proved divisive in the past as developers and local landowners regularly bring forward proposals for wind turbines in the valley.
In total 10 special landscapes have been identified across Aberdeenshire by the council.
In Buchan, the north-east Aberdeenshire coast has been earmarked from Fraserburgh to Peterhead, and Buchan Ness to Blackdog for its beaches and panoramic views out to sea.
The controversial decision to exclude Mormond Hill is expected to arise again next month, when Fraserburgh councillors on the Banff and Buchan area committee are shown the proposals.
The Formartine area committee will meet to discuss Mr Blaxter’s report in Ellon tomorrow morning.
