Aberdeen City Council’s fraud team was unable to pursue 40 allegations last year due to a “lack of resources”.
Councillors on the audit committee quizzed fraud manager Brian Muldoon on the city’s first ever fraud report yesterday.
Last week the Press and Journal revealed that former senior housing officer Kiemon Stewart had left the council following allegations he had ordered replacement windows for his girlfriend’s council flat and given her priority over other waiting tenants.
The former RAF flight lieutenant is now working for a charity in Northern Ireland.
And yesterday it was revealed that 40 fraud allegations were not pursed for council services such as disabled blue badges and right to buy.
The report reads: “It was not possible to undertake investigations in 40 cases due to resourcing and the major investigations that were undertaken or ongoing.”
SNP councillor David Cameron asked if the report meant fraudsters had “got away with it”.
Mr Muldoon replied: “The simple answer is yes.”
He added that the fraud team was being strengthened and a another investigator brought in.
