An SNP supporter in Aberdeen got a treat on his 100th birthday yesterday when First Minister Nicola Sturgeon arrived to wish him well.
Bert Clark, who stays at Coronation Court in Peterculter, has supported the party for most of his life, but has never met a leader face to face.
He was joined on the day by his daughter Sylvia and grandchildren Stewart and Gavin.
They all waited eagerly as the First Minister came into the home to help cut his cake.
When she asked him how it felt to be turning 100 he joked: “It took me a while.”
Ms Sturgeon later paid tribute to his long-standing support for the party.
She said: “I’ve only ever met one supporter of us who was older than him – that was a 103-year-old in Kirkcaldy.
“Bert has assured me that both his votes will be going to the right place this Thursday.
“It’s people like him who supported the SNP when we were not as successful and it was not fashionable who have helped bring us success.”
Mr Clark was born in Govan and spent his career in Edinburgh as a slaughterman.
He relocated to Coronation Court 12 years ago when his family moved to the north-east and was one of the first residents in the care home.
He is not his family’s only long-term SNP supporter and it was through his daughter’s connection with SNP candidate Maureen Watt that the visit happened.
Mrs Watt said: “I’ve known his family for a long time because they have been keen attendees at conferences.
“Obviously, when I realised Nicola was going to be here on the day Bert turned 100, it made sense to get her along.”
