The cost of a major new sports facility in a north-east town could exceed £1million.
Last week the Press and Journal revealed that plans have been tabled to transform an area of Fraserburgh into a centre of sporting excellence with a new football pitch and multi-lane running track.
The project is being spearheaded by Fraserburgh South Links Sports Development Trust with the support of Aberdeenshire Council.
The estimated total cost of the scheme is £1.2million and the trust has identified £455,000 of funding from the Scottish Government and local council.
Applications for the remainder of the funding from groups including Sportscotland would require planning approval to be granted, so now the trust – a registered charity – is hosting a public consultation meeting.
In a statement, a spokesman for the group said: “The project is a community initiative to improve the sporting provisions while making a positive contribution to the general economic, health and well-being of the town and surrounding villages.
“The Trust recognise the support the council – both officials and members – and the Fraserburgh Feuars – the effective owners of the land – have given over the last 12 months in getting the project to this stage and look forward to its completion next year and realising the visions set for the project.”
The proposed new natural grass football pitch, six-lane all-weather running track and all-ability cycling track will be built alongside the existing tennis court, putting green and skate park.
The public consultation on the Fraserburgh South Links Sports Development will be held on Friday from 6pm at the town’s Community and Sport Centre.
