An emergency motion calling for a rethink on plans to close two Aberdeen swimming pools have been lodged.
Hazlehead councillors Martin Greig and Jennifer Stewart put forward that Hazlehead and Kincorth pools should be reopened until a “full public consultation” had been carried out on their future.
The motion will be discussed at full council tomorrow.
Sport Aberdeen closed the two facilities permanently on Friday after having their budget slashed by £405,000 by council chiefs this year.
They argue that the pools only average around 33 users a day and it would be cost-prohibitive to continue operating them.
With Torry and Kincorth Academies due to move to the new City South Academy in 2017, the Kincorth pool will be replaced with a new facility at the school.
But the move has resulted in outrage and a public petition to reverse the closures has gained more than 400 signatures.
Mrs Stewart said: “These are central community assets, the nearest pool for Hazlehead folk is now Northfield.”
Aberdeen South and North Kincardine MSP Maureen Watt and Aberdeen South MP Calum McCaig have written to the council’s chief executive calling for options to keep them open.
Aberdeen City Council education convener, Angela Taylor, said: “Everyone knows that Aberdeen is the lowest funded local authority in Scotland so while funding is limited, we need to deploy our resources in the most effective way.”
