Catering staff at primary schools in Aberdeen have been given a prestigious prize for their work.

The canteen collective have received Soil Association Scotland’s Food for Life Award in recognition of the healthy and fresh meals they prepare for youngsters in the city.

The staff received a silver accreditation for their work in all the primary schools in Aberdeen and the award was passed on following an audit inspection of Scotstown Primary School.

Neil Cooney, convener of Aberdeen City Council’s communities committee, welcomed the recognition of the catering staff’s hard work.

He said: “This is a fantastic story of genuine achievement in improving the lives of our school pupils.

“Our catering staff and all the catering team are to be commended for the great lengths to which they go to prepare healthy school meals with ingredients from farms of the north-east.

“Obesity is an evergrowing problem in our society and these men and women play no small part in educating young people about the benefits of healthy eating.”

Angela Mitchell, acting director of Soil Association Scotland, expressed her delight that the caterers were working to promote healthy lifestyles.

She added: “Aberdeen City Council should be very proud of their progression from Bronze to Silver.

“They must be commended for their ongoing work in championing excellence in school meals, and engaging their primary school pupils, teachers and parents along the way.
