A north-east community group has launched a youth cafe in Peterhead in an effort to offer young people an alternative to causing trouble in the town centre.
The shopping precinct in the port has become notorious for anti-social behaviour during summer evenings, with instances of vandalism and reports of intimidation.
Now performing arts and youth group Modo have opened a clubhouse with activities for youngsters.
Dozens of teenagers have already visited the site in the Drummers Corner area to use the pool and ping pong tables on offer.
Modo boss, Martin Danziger, said: “We held our first evening on Monday and had 50 people through the door. Young people are just happy to have a space they’re not being chased away from.
“We managed to get a pool table, a ping pong table, a chess board and a Wii donated.
“We managed to get a whole bunch of things for people to do but part of it is that it’s somewhere indoors for them to go and chat. And they can chat to us as well.”
Modo is a performing arts and youth initiative which encourages teenagers in the region to make positive life choices.
The youth cafe project is being run in the former Happit shop in Drummers Corner. The space was also used for the recent Choose Peterhead workshops which attracted hundreds of local people.
The Choose Peterhead scheme is an ongoing effort to regenerate the heart of the north-east’s biggest town, and is asking locals to have their say on the future of the area.
A report from urban planners Pidgin Perfect – which oversaw the workshops – is due back during the summer.
