A north-east piper who broke the world record for playing for more than 24 hours has revealed his feat managed to raise more than £7,000 for charity.
Rikki Evans made history by playing the bagpipes for 26 hours, five minutes and 32 seconds at the National Piping Centre in Glasgow last summer, and was later confirmed as a Guinness World Record Holder.
Now the 29-year-old, of Portlethen, has revealed he managed to raise £7,805 which will be split between Clan Cancer Support, Cash For Kids, The Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust, The National Piping Centre and his own pipe band.
Mr Evans, a police controller in Aberdeen, used two sets of pipes to complete the record.
The first set has been sold for more £1000, whilst he hopes to donate the second set to charity.
He said: “I’m still not sure what I’ll be doing with the second set but I’m thrilled with the first sale.
“I got a fair amount of donations during the event as it was screened live which was brilliant, but I have been really chuffed with all the donations I have received and really pleased with how it has all gone.”
Mr Evans said he still can’t believe he managed to break the record and wouldn’t rule out doing it again.
He said: “It took over a year to plan everything but when I knew I’d set a record, it was absolutely overwhelming, I still actually find it a bit surreal.
“I can’t believe I actually appear in the book so I hope it stays there for a while. People online say they could do it and it was easy, but no one is yet to officially challenge my record.
“But if it isn’t challenged in years to come I would consider doing it again and try and raise more money for charity. But I am also hoping to contact Guinness again to see if there are any other piping challenges I can take on.”
