A former north-east secondary school site could be transformed into affordable housing.
Pupils from Alford Academy moved to a new community campus last year and the future of the former school is under consideration.
At a meeting of Aberdeenshire’s social work and housing committee, councillor Geva Blackett asked why so few affordable homes were being built in her Aboyne, Upper Deeside and Donside ward during the next two years.
She said: “We’re losing our young people and yet we only have 10 houses coming forward in my ward.
The local authority’s affordable housing team leader Elaine Reid responded that, although the 10 homes planned for Lumphanan, were the only properties confirmed for the area, other projects were under consideration.
Mrs Reid added: “What’s quite important is the grant money we have – it’s use it or lose it. In the Marr area we are looking at other options.
“We’re looking at how we can tap into the former Alford Academy site. We’re working with our other property colleagues to make the best of our assets.”
The academy, as well as similar secondary schools in Ellon and Laurencekirk, are being considered by the council’s asset disposal team.
The future demolition of the premises will be discussed by Aberdeenshire’s policy committee when they meet at Woodhill House on Thursday.
The decision will be made in private.
