Everybody knows about convenience food. But what about public convenience food?
That could be the scenario, after plans were submitted to transform an Aberdeen public toilet into a cafe.
Developer Harry Miller purchased the Old Aberdeen public toilets site on the High Street last November and has worked with Squire Associates on a planning application.
Images have now been unveiled, showing how the site could look if it gains the go-ahead.
The granite front wall would be retained and upgraded to include new double-glazed windows and doors.
The pictures illustrate how a new outdoor seating area could be created between the building and the neighbouring Aberdeen University Event Office.
There would also be a second floor, which would include extra space for customers.
The kitchen, toilets and serving area would be located on the ground floor and Mr Miller said he hopes to have the building finished by September.
He added: “The building is about 425 sq ft.
“It would lend itself to something special if we can get planning permission.
“The building has been unused for some time and it was in a quite dangerous state.
“I think it’s a good location because anybody doing the tourist route in Aberdeen would be coming from St Machar’s Cathedral.
“There’s certainly a market for it. And, subject to planning, it’s possible we could have it finished by September.”
Councillor Ross Grant, of the Tillydrone, Seaton and Old Aberdeen ward, has welcomed the news.
He said: “Without pre-judging any application, the toilets have been lying in a state of disrepair for over 10 years at least and have also been the subject of vandalism over the years.
“If there is a plan that proposes to sensitively breathe life into a building so close to the lovely Old Town House, I’m sure members of the planning committee will be interested to see what the applicants can come up with.”
