A cafe in Aberdeen city centre has been given permission to remain open until 4am despite neighbouring businesses expressing concerns.
Muhammad Sagid bought the site at 10 Bridge Street last year and invested £100,000 to turn it into an eatery which serves coffee, pizza and kebabs.
Yesterday, the licensing committee of Aberdeen City Council gave it the green light to remain open until the early hours of the morning.
But John McGivney, the general manager of the nearby Bridge Street Social Club and Underground Nightclub, claimed the extension could cause problems for customers leaving his premises and heading towards Union Street.
He said: “We have a duty to our customers even after they have left our premise, to get them up to Union Street and into taxis.
“The other takeaways on this street are further to the south.
“If this business is allowed to stay open until 4am, people will gather there and move out onto the road where there is a lot of traffic.”
But Jennifer Wilson, representing Mr Sagid, defended the proposal.
She added: “The business is not just a takeaway, it serves coffee, has a toilet and invites people to come in.
“Mr Sagid feels he has something unique to offer. The police were made aware of this application and made no objection.”
