A young mathematician said Aberdeen University was the obvious choice for her – because of her mother’s own fond memories of more than 20 years ago.
Rachel Bruce graduated yesterday, with her proud mum holding back the tears.
And she said it was her mother’s own experiences during her teaching training that had helped her pick where to study.
The 22-year-old, of Dyce, said: “I had heard good things about Aberdeen University and was especially keen to come here after my mum had done her teaching degree when I think she was around 18.
“And even though it was a while ago, she had always said good things. I am very close to my family so it was important that I was able to stay close to them, but also have the university experience that I wanted.
“I think my mum is a bit teary today seeing me graduate from the same place as she did. I have quite a bit of family here today and it’s all been a great experience and I can’t believe it’s coming to an end.”
Despite studying close to home, Miss Bruce moved into student halls to gain her own independence.
She said: “I was always keen to move into university halls and it was so amazing, I made so many friends through that and think it is far more sociable than staying at home.
“I would say to people that are planning on studying in the same city as you live in is to at least live in halls or with friends for part of it – I think that’s the only way you can get that full university experience.
“And especially in first year it is important to get that independence because you do often change as a person through university.
“For myself living in halls I made friends for life and I definitely couldn’t have made it though some of the more stressful times at university without them.”
