Teenager died after losing control of his car on A90 near Fraserburgh

A teenage driver was killed when his car went out of control and overturned on the north-east’s busiest road.

Jordan Gibbins was alone in the grey Honda Civic when the crash happened on the A90 about a mile south of Fraserburgh.

The 17-year-old was heading towards the town at the time.

Police have appealed for witnesses but said no other vehicle was involved.

Jordan worked at construction supply firm Hall and Robertson with his father Kevin, and was the grandson of former Aberdeenshire councillor John Gibbins, who lives at Crimond and represented the Lonmay and St Fergus ward.

His uncle and aunt, David and Tina Gibbins, run the Ban-Car Hotel at Lonmay and his dad and mother Carol formerly ran the Saplinbrae Hotel near Mintlaw.

Jordan’s family were too upset to speak about the tragedy yesterday.

It us understood the teenager, who stayed at Mintlaw, had been heading to Fraserburgh after spending the evening with friends and family who gathered in memory of a cousin.

Fraserburgh councillor Brian Topping said last night he felt “numb” when he heard about the crash.

“This will be absolutely devastating news for his family and friends,” said Councillor Topping, who is chairman of the local community safety group.

“It’s a complete tragedy, and my thoughts and prayers are with them at this very, very sad time.

“It’s just horrific. Like a lot of people I’m sure, I was completely numb when I heard about it. You can only think of his loved ones and how they must be feeling.

“It seems so young for someone to die – 17. I know the north-east, going back two or three years ago, had the highest number of road accidents and deaths in Scotland, but in recent years they have improved greatly.

“However, any crash is a crash too many.”

Mintlaw councillor Jim Ingram added: “It’s truly a tragedy for his family.

“That someone as young as him has died is quite shocking, really. Your thoughts can only go to his family and friends.

“About a year ago I was getting really concerned with the number of accidents we were having in the central Buchan area, and this is really disappointing that a young lad has been killed.”

Friends paid tribute to Jordan on social media.

Natalie West said: “This can’t be real.”

She later added that she would “never be the same again”.

Lori Taylor wrote: “Still can’t believe it. Love you Jordan.”

And Blair Watson posted: “Can’t believe you’ve been taken away from us.”

Police closed the A90 from Fraserburgh’s Tesco roundabout to the junction with the B9032 road to Memsie as they carried out a 10-hour investigation at the scene of the accident.

Sergeant Rob Warnock, who is leading the inquiry, said: “First and foremost, my thoughts are obviously with the family and friends of this young man at this tragic time.

“I would appeal for anyone who might have seen the vehicle described in the moments leading up to the collision, or has any information about the incident itself, to contact police.”

The crash happened around 3am yesterday.
