A north-east teenager has been named the best apprentice in the north.
Sean McCafferty, who is in the second year of his traineeship with Peterhead firm AM Campbell (UK) Ltd Electricians, won the award after pipping eight other young sparkies from across the region.
The 19-year-old also studies on block release at the Fraserburgh campus of North East Scotland College.
The awards are organised by the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT) which manages training schemes across the Scottish Joint Industry Board.
Mr McCafferty now has the opportunity to compete in Dubai later this year, but to make it that far he will have battle to be named the best apprentice in the whole of the UK.
Last night, his father Mike, who also works at AM Campbell Ltd, said the teenager competed against students from Aberdeen to Orkney to make it to the finals.
He said: “The finalists were put through a rigorous assessment of both practical skills and theoretical knowledge in each of their area competitions.
“Sean was announced the winner for the second year Electrical Apprentice of the Year 2016, and now has the opportunity to go for the UK award – and if successful on to the world award in Dubai.”
SECTT was established in 1990 and runs the only industry-approved training scheme for electrical engineers in Scotland.
It is designed to regulate the entry, education and training of everyone entering the industry.
The programme incorporates the Modern Apprenticeship, which includes the Level 3 Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in electrical installation.
