A last-ditch attempt will be made next week to save two Aberdeen swimming pools threatened with closure.
Sport Aberdeen announced last month that it would be shutting the Hazlehead and Kincorth amenities in August following a review of facilities in the city.
However, hundreds of people have subsequently signed a petition calling for the pools to be saved, with Aberdeen’s Olympic swimmer Robbie Renwick also criticising the decision.
Sport Aberdeen is faced with a funding gap after Aberdeen City Council slashed its budget by £405,000 earlier this year, and has argued that the two pools are not used enough to justify keeping them open.
But administration chiefs have responded the decision on the pools’ future lies with Sport Aberdeen and the council cannot interfere.
Motions to save the pools were put forward by the opposition SNP and Liberal Democrat groups with the Liberal-backed protest going before full council next Wednesday.
The motion which councillors will discuss calls for £405,000 to be allocated from contingency funding to keep both pools open for at least a year.
Last night, Cllr Martin Greig said he believed the council could still be persuaded to change their minds.
He added: “I think it is really important to fight for improved services even if sometimes you have to go against the odds to do so.
“I don’t think this is a done deal necessarily, the last motion took the casting vote of the convener to stop it, so I will be going in next week hoping my motion gains enough support.”
