Business owners in the north-east have been warned of a flood of counterfeit money coming into the area.
Police have responded to several reports of suspect cash being used to pay for goods and services in the Kincardine and Formantine areas and have warned people to exercise caution when accepting high-value bank notes.
Officers recommed that checks should be made of notes prior to acceptance with particular attention paid when checking watermarks and serial numbers.
Sgt Rod Smith said: “We are warning shopkeepers to be on the look out for these notes, which we believe are English £50 notes.
“We would also ask that any suspicious activity or relevant information is reported by calling 101 or if wishing to remain anonymous via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
