Coastguard teams were rushed to a north-east town last night after reports of flares being let off near a school – only to find that there was no emergency.
A number of units were called to Stonehaven’s Mackie Academy, including the town’s own RNLI lifeboats, at around 11.15pm last night.
The call came after red flares were reported to have been seen near the academy building late in the evening.
But when teams arrived on the scene and carried out an investigation, nothing was found.
A spokesman for the coastguard said: “There had been reports of red flares being sent up – possibly around the Mackie Academy area.
“We investigated and searched the Stonehaven Bay area but nothing was found.”
