A new cinema on the outskirts of Aberdeen has been proposed as part of £150 million development plans.
The 850-seat venue would be created alongside several retail outlets, a hotel, petrol station and business space at Blackdog.
Ashfield Land initially announced their plans to create a new town centre in the area in March . If they are given approval for the project, construction will begin in 2017.
However, the proposals have come under fire from Aberdeen City Council who claim the scheme would have an “adverse effect” on the city centre, although the proposed site is in Aberdeenshire.
The council argued that people would be deterred from coming into Aberdeen city centre if the plan went ahead.
Gale Beattie, who is in charge of the city council’s planning and sustainable development department, expressed concerns.
Ms Beattie said: “We consider the scale of development proposed has the potential to adversely effect on the vitality and viability of Aberdeen city centre, and the role it plays as a regional centre for the north-east.
“The 850-seat cinema should also be recognised as having a regional draw.”
It has been claimed by the developer that the economic benefits of the proposals would lead to the creation of 1,200 jobs during construction and 1,500 full-time jobs longer term.
This would assist in the growth of the Energetica development corridor between Aberdeen and Peterhead.
Energetica development manager, James Welsh added: “Blackdog is a key development for Energetica because it is strategically located on a key junction of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route and A90, giving good access from both north and south.”
