Plans to create a £1million golf clubhouse on the site of an historic Aberdeen pub have been bunkered by the developer.
Carlton Rock boss Alan Massie revealed that he has shelved his ambitious plans for the former Broadhill Bar.
A clubhouse with bar and restaurant had been earmarked to replace the bar, which has served generations of Dons supporters on their way to Pittodrie.
The city’s Northern, Bon Accord and Caledonian golf clubs had been eyeing the site, which has been empty since 2011, for a new joint base.
But in 2014 Mr Massie was selected by Aberdeen City Council as the preferred bidder for a lease of its land.
Mr Massie had met with the clubs and welcomed the possibility of them sharing the proposed building.
But he confirmed he has now pulled out of the plans, offering the opportunity to others to develop the bar.
He said: “As others were keen to get it, we have said to the council we would withdraw on the basis the community around it would take control.
“Sport Aberdeen was keen to facilitate something with the golf clubs.
“There were so many other people keen for it.
“We thought this decision would be for the best.”
City council finance convener Willie Young said: “This will give us an opportunity to explore other uses.
“We had thought this had moved forward but this is now not the case.
“We will work with anyone to try to move this forward and to develop the site.
“I hope something will come to the finance, policy resources committee soon.”
