An Ellon man has raised hundreds of pounds for a heart charity as part of his birthday celebrations.
For his 50th birthday party, Colin Burgess, who has suffered from learning difficulties since birth, asked his guests to make a donation to Grampian Cardiac Rehab, rather than buying gifts.
Yesterday, Mr Burgess and his father, Charles, handed over a cheque for £750 to the charity.
Dr Burgess said his son was keen to raise money for the charity after his mother had a heart attack three years ago.
He said: “The reason Colin chose to donate to the charity is because his mother suffered a heart attack three years ago in China, and when being back at home she attended the rehab classes.
“They are Grampian wide and are attended by people who have had heart attacks or heart surgery and they do exercises and routines to make the heart fitter.
“The charity gets no funding from the NHS, and so donations like this are very important to the cause.
“I think with it being his 50th he wanted to do something special, so he held a party and asked on the invite that he didn’t want presents but if they wished, would they donate to Grampian Cardiac Rehab.
“We never thought we would raise this much though, the amount is outstanding.
“We’re all delighted and very grateful to everyone who donated at the party. No one knows when we might run into cardiac problems so if you are able to give, please do.”
Mr Burgess jun echoed his fathers’ words, thanking all of those who donated to the fund during his birthday celebrations.
He said: “I’m thrilled to have raised this much and would like to thank everyone.
“I’d encourage other to do the same if they are able.”
