A north-east law graduate was driven by her own experiences of being bullied.
Donna Yeats, from Banff, picked up an LLB law degree at His Majesty’s Theatre yesterday, her second in the past five years.
The 22-year-old left school in fifth year to study law, inspired to help vulnerable people after she was bullied as a child.
“I really suffered because I wasn’t able to stand up for myself,” she said.
“They really got to me, and I wanted to help other people that found themselves in that position.”
With another year to go before she becomes fully qualified, after completing her diploma in legal practice, Miss Yeats hopes to pursue a career in family and medical law.
Both areas are close to her heart after she watched her grandfather battle Alzheimer’s disease in the last years of his life.
She said: “My grandfather was a supporter of euthanasia which was a right that was unavailable to him in this country.
“It became a passion for me and I did a lot of research into it, it’s something that I would like to see legalised.”
Miss Yeats was joined at yesterday’s ceremony by her mother and father, Frances and Colin, and her older sister, Tracey, who has additional support needs.
She added: “My mum and dad have always supported me because my sister wasn’t in a position to go to university.
“It’s always been at the back of my mind that there are people who aren’t able to speak for themselves.”
