Plans for hundreds of new north-east homes lodged

North Woods, Mintlaw.
North Woods, Mintlaw.

New plans have been lodged for the next phase of a major housing development in Buchan’s largest village.

Fraserburgh-based builder Colaren Homes has tabled designs for 100 new properties in Mintlaw.

The scheme is an expansion of the Northwoods development on the northern edge of the village which is nearly complete.

Speaking on behalf of the developer, architect Ryan Urquhart said: “As the construction works of this phase are nearing completion, an opportunity has been identified to continue development of the overall site.

“The development will be structured around a pedestrian-orientated network of streets and spaces which respects the existing grid-like pattern and landscape structure of Mintlaw.”

He added that the whole development will be sympathetic to the local environment, including the beech trees alongside Balring Road.

The proposed 100 homes will include a range of sizes from three-bedroom to five-bedroom family properties. A quarter of the houses will be “affordable”.

Aberdeenshire Council is due to make a decision on the plans within the next three months.

The news comes as multimillion-pound plans for a new Peterhead neighbourhood are set for approval.

The South Ugie village development was first proposed in 2014 and will include more than 1,000 homes, in addition to space for new businesses, a health centre and a primary school.

The scheme will be presented to members of the Buchan Area Committee when they gather for a special meeting on Tuesday.

In his report to councillors, Aberdeenshire’s infrastructure chief, Stephen Archer, has backed the development for approval.

He said: “The core aims in developing the masterplan have been the desire to create a place which is a mixed use community and urban village and not just a suburban extension to Peterhead.

“[Instead, this is] a community that has good connectivity with Peterhead by all modes of transport including car, public transport, cycling and walking.”
