The north-east’s biggest summer gala came to an explosive climax last night as thousands of people gathered to watch the annual raft race and fireworks display.
The crowds who gathered at Peterhead’s harbour and lido for the Thursday party were also treated to a display from The Blades aerobatic display team.
The arrival of the display team – who do not usually perform on the same evening as the lido events – is always seen as a coup for organisers although poor weather forced the cancellation of their performance in 2014.
There was more action on the water with the bay swim challenge and raft race before local families and visitors settled down to enjoy the pyrotechnics.
With the weather forecast to be overcast but dry over the final three days of the gala there is still plenty of events to enjoy.
Today, the children’s party takes over the community centre from 2-4pm and tomorrow Alice in Wonderland’s titular character will be put on mock trial at the town’s sheriff court.
Peterhead’s Scottish Week has been held in the town every year since 1961 and attracts thousands of visitors.
Similar galas in towns and villages across the country have gradually died out and the Peterhead event is now the only one of its kind in Scotland.
