An Aberdeen MP has hit out at members of the public who criticise the delivery of her commons speeches.
Aberdeen North member Kirsty Blackman claims she has received several letters from members of the public saying she speaks to quickly and nervously while using notes.
But the SNP MP’s complaints received little sympathy from a taxpayer group, who said “it’s her job” to get her facts and figures across accurately.
Ms Blackman – who receives a salary of more than £70,000 before expenses – was elected to parliament last year and said the criticism could put off others from pursing a career in politics.
The 30-year-old wrote on social media: “Speaking in the claustrophobic, combative environment, particularly in the chamber of the House of Commons, is not easy.
“Any accidentally incorrect figures you mention will be picked up and used against you.
“Criticising parliamentarians for their delivery is a good way to ensure that only those with years of public speaking experience either stand for parliament or talk in the chamber.
“A parliament entirely made up of those who did debating at school would not be a representative one.”
But last night her words were met with a furious reaction who said that for the salary she is paid she should be getting figures correct.
Eben Wilson, of the Taxpayer Scotland pressure group, said: “All politicians get into politics to put a message across, it’s a bit much for a politician to react so brusquely to criticism.
“She makes out giving a speech in parliament is like a mission to Mars.
“It’s not, it’s her job and we pay her to do it.”
