An architecture graduate has scooped a top prize from a national student award scheme.
Daniel Cardno, who left the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen with a masters of architecture last month, has won the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) Rowand Anderson Silver Medal for best fifth year student.
The 24-year-old secured the accolade through one of his projects, which mapped out ways for the Norwegian village of Eidsvag to transition from an oil-based economy to one based on the maritime industry and tourism.
The former Oldmachar Academy pupil based his modern designs on traditional Norwegian architecture, and created the proposals to reflect the Scandinavian country’s strong links to seafaring life via the creation of a marine research centre in the middle of the community.
Mr Cardno said: “The project emphasises Norway’s relationship with water and the maritime industry.
“The centre is positioned on the north side of a small island within the bay, and the design is an adaptation of the vernacular boat shed form found on the east coast of Norway.
“There was a lot of really good work exhibited at the award ceremony, so I was really surprised when I heard my name called out.
“It’s nice to have some recognition for my hard work.
“It’s also good for the Scott Sutherland School to get some attention, as I often feel it is forgotten about, being the most northern architecture school in the country.”
Mr Cardno said he hopes the award will help him on his way to securing a job in the architecture industry.
He said: “I’ve had a small break and done some travelling, but I’m really keen to get out and start working.”
