A north-east youth club has been awarded £10,000 to help run future activities in Peterhead.
The money, a grant from the Awards for All Scotland scheme, will allow sea cadet unit 269 to buy new equipment to help youngsters make a splash on the open ocean.
Five new sailing dinghies have already identified by the club for purchase, with the rest of the cash set to go towards trolleys to help ferry them between the harbour and boat shed.
Unit 269 – TS Caledonia – encourages local children to develop an interest in the ocean, helping to develop their skills through a range of boating and sea-based activities.
And last night, local MSP Stewart Stevenson, a supporter of the charity in Peterhead, said the money would be well spent by the club.
“This is an exciting boost for young people in Aberdeenshire and a great opportunity for them to go out and enjoy sailing,” he said.
“Awards for All Scotland is an excellent programme that gives groups across our country the opportunity to apply for grants of between £500 and £10,000 for various projects.
“These projects bring communities together, improve local space and help communities become more active. This funding will allow young people to be active while taking part in exciting new experiences.”
The Awards for All Scotland scheme is run in partnership between the Big Lottery Fund and sportscotland, which awards money to groups and causes throughout Scotland.
Aimed at smaller groups, Awards for All is focussed on organisations who have not received a grant from the Lottery programme in the last three years.
Groups can apply for cash to arrange events, to buy equipment, or to pay for expenses such as staff costs and transport.
