A shop in Aberdeen was targeted by thieves for the second time in two years yesterday evening.
Police were called to the Gallowgate Convenience Store near North East Scotland College at 4.30pm following reports of a disturbance.
Seven police units were sent to the scene and officers maintained a presence for more than two hours as investigations were carried out.
Siema Lekra, who works at the neighbouring Donians fish and chip shop, said: “I saw seven cars arrive here after 4pm.
“Police went into the shop next door and we were told it had been robbed.”
In May last year a man carrying a knife entered the store and threatened an employee in front of her seven-year-old son.
On that occasion he made off with cigarettes and around £500.
Police were unable to confirm last night whether anything was stolen from the shop this time round or whether those responsible were armed.
A police spokesman said: “We were called to the scene at 4.30pm.
“We are not sure whether anything was stolen.
“We would appeal for anyone with information to come forward.”
Last night councillor Nathan Morrison, who represents the George Street and Harbour ward, said an additional police presence in the area may be needed to deter would-be offenders.
He said: “I would ask anyone who knows anything about this to come forward to the police.
“It is not the first time something like this has happened here.
“My sympathy of course goes out to the staff, whoever are involved. It can’t have been a nice thing to go through and I extend my sympathy.
“We will need to add to safety around there.
“It may need more police on foot patrol to set up a visible presence to help deter offenders.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if they wish to remain anonymous.
