A north-east community woodland project has received a £20,000 cash boost from the People’s Postcode Lottery.
The funding from the Postcode Local Trust will enable further enhancement of the Buchan Meadows on the outskirts of Peterhead.
New initiatives at the 43-acre site include increased tree planting, development of the waterways and the creation of a wildflower meadow to improve biodiversity.
The current network of visitor paths will also be extended in the coming months to develop the existing scheme.
The purpose of the woodland – overseen by local development trust Peterhead Projects – is to introduce local schoolchildren, community groups and the wider public to outdoor skills such as shelter building and habitat management.
Hundreds of youngsters have already taken part in activities in the woodland, including bush skills courses.
Peterhead Projects development boss Ken Duncan said: “Through previous funding, we were able to develop the site significantly, including creating a car park which has improved access for visitors.
“Not only will this fresh funding enable us to provide more eco-diversity at the woodland, it will also help develop the site as a valuable educational resource for all ages to enjoy.”
The organisation leased the 43 acres of land on the outskirts of the town from international engineering firm Score Group in 2010.
