Aberdeen FC’s flying winger Jonny Hayes has been caught speeding through roadworks at 84mph.
The 29-year-old was in his grey Mercedes sports coupe when he was snared by police in a temporary 50mph limit.
He was on the A90 Aberdeen-Peterhead road at Easter Hatton – near the Taylor Industrial Waste premises – when he was caught.
Roadworks are being carried out on the stretch of the route between Murcar and Balmedie as part of the Aberdeen bypass and Balmedie-Tipperty dualling scheme.
Last month, Transport Scotland switched on average-speed cameras to enforce the 50mph limit.
Hayes was caught on April 17 in his year-old Mercedes Benz E220 AMG Line coupe.
He did not appear in person at Aberdeen Justice of the Peace Court yesterday but admitted the speeding offence by letter.
The Irishman, of 15 Mitchell Brae, Balmedie, will be sentenced later this month.
In January, police vowed to crack down on motorists flouting the temporary 50mph speed restrictions.
Officers said they had been receiving “daily” calls about drivers failing to reduce their speed and stepped up patrols as a result.
Average-speed cameras had been in position along the carriageway between Blackdog and Balmedie for more than three months before being switched on last month.
Technical issues which caused problems sending images from the cameras to a control room in Dundee delayed them going live.
Hayes arrived on the Scottish football scene in 2009 when he moved from Cheltenham Town to then-First Division Inverness Caledonian Thistle and helped them win promotion to the premier league.
He joined the Dons in 2012 and has become a firm favourite with fans.
He scored some memorable goals last season, including a strike against Celtic on February 25 which earned him the AFC and PFA Scotland goal of the season awards.
Last night, an Aberdeen FC spokesman said the club did not want to comment on the court case.
