Aberdeen City Council could set up its own company in an attempt reduce emissions and make money by selling excess energy back to the National Grid.
The council hopes to produce its own power through projects like the proposed energy from waste plant in Nigg and the new Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.
The authority has a long term goal to reduce emissions in the city by 50% by 2030.
It would be following on the heels of Nottingham Council who established the UK’s first local authority-owned fully licensed gas and electricity supplier.
Council officers predict that setting up the company could cost between £30,000 and £45,000.
Council finance convener Willie Young said: “We think this could benefit the taxpayer greatly.”
Members will debate the matter at next Wednesday’s meeting of the full councils.
