It’s set to be a miserable wet and windy weekend but our cold summer could be set take a turn for the better next week thanks to a wave of hot air coming from sunny Spain.
Thermometers are forecast to hit highs of 25C and even higher from Monday as the hot continental weather blows north across the country.
And the summery conditions could arrive as soon as Sunday night – even if it does come a bit later than anticipated in the rest of the UK.
Met Office meteorologist Emma Sharples said: “Warm air will be coming in and travelling north from Europe so it might take a little bit longer to reach parts of Scotland.
“Over the weekend there will be spells of heavy rain over areas of the Highlands but it should start to dry up by Sunday.
“On Monday, we’re looking at temperatures of around 18-19C in Aberdeen, while it could reach 20-21C further inland.
“On Tuesday, we should see the temperature rise and reach the mid-20s by the late-afternoon.
“Wednesday will bring fresher conditions around coastal areas but it should still remain warm during the day as we see bright and sunny spells.
“Overnight it could get quite humid and we could possibly see storms moving in for Thursday due to warm air circulating in the area.”
Meanwhile, the ‘Spanish plume’ will bring scorching conditions for those further south, with temperatures set to reach 35C.
Forecasters are suggesting it could be the hottest August day for 13 years, only narrowly being exceeded by 2003’s UK record of 38.5C.
