A new Aberdeen street art festival kicks off in the city centre tonight.
The world-acclaimed Nuart Festival starts its Granite City run this evening at 7pm in The Anatomy Rooms at Marischal College.
The festival, spearheaded by Aberdeen Inspired, runs until Sunday. It began in 2001 in the Norwegian city of Stavanger.
After tonight’s opening events, the festival will have a conference day tomorrow called Art and Everyday Life: History, Heritage and Archaeology.
This will run from 2-5pm at the Belmont Filmhouse on Belmont Street.
The three-hour programme will feature presentations on The Invisible College — Building Communities of Creative Practice at Kilmahew-St.Peters and Where Heritage Meets Art. This will be followed by the panel debate: Traces of the Future, Memories of the Past.
From 6-8pm tomorrow the Belmont Street cinema will host Brooklyn Street Art Film Festival ‘Live’ and from 9:30-11pm there will be a debate at Underdog on Union Street focussing on grandstand mural and small scale inventions.
On Saturday there will be street printing at the Castlegate from 11am-3pm, led by German street artists Raubdruckerin.
There will also be the Nuart public opening at The Green from 12-1pm as well street art walking tours from 1-2pm and 2-3pm departing from The Green.
Saturday will also be the second conference day held at the Belmont Filmhouse focussing on Art and Everyday Life.
Running from 2-4pm it will feature discussions on DIY Interventions into Public Space and a conversation on Rights to the City.
From 4-6pm the cinema will show the UK premiere of the film Saving Banksy.
And from 9pm onwards Drummonds on Belmont Street host a launch party.
On Sunday there will be a Chalk Don’t Chalk Workshop from 11am-3pm at the St Nicolas Centre’s Rooftop Garden.
There will be an Easter Sunday Street Art Hunt from 1-2pm at The Green and street art walking tours departing from the same venue at 1pm and 2pm.
To round off Nuart, there will be a screening of Beautiful Losers from 4-6pm at the Belmont Cinema.
Jasmin Siddiqui, one half of German double act Herakut who have painted a wall at The Green, said: “I’m really enjoying being in Aberdeen, I’m having such a good time and the wall I’ve painted is one of the my favourites already and I hope the people of Aberdeen enjoy it.”
