Plans to breathe new life into the former Jimmy Chungs site at Aberdeen’s beach esplanade include units for five new eateries.
The building burned down in February last year.
More than 50 firefighters battled the blaze last year, which resulted in a roof collapsing and left the building, which housed a Jimmy Chungs, the Pier Bistro, TC Fish Restaurant and ADS Janitorial, a charred ruin.
The site has lain disused since then, but now the owners of the Hornblowers Restaurant and Takeaway at Gourdon are hoping to take over the lease on the land by partnering with owner Rossnow Leisure and TCD Architects.
If Alex and Ruth Grahame’s proposals are approved by the city council, Aberdonians will not have to travel all the way to Gourdon for a taste of the Hornblowers’ award-winning fish and chips.
Mrs Grahame said: “We’ve been searching for the perfect site in the city for years and when the lease came up on the site, we were really delighted.
“It’s got everything we were looking for, lots of people in the vicinity, a large floor area and of course the most amazing sea views over the beautiful sandy beach.
“We knew we wanted a bistro-style restaurant and takeaway, similar to what we have in Gourdon already, which brings the best produce from sea and field to table, together with a 1950’s-style ice cream parlour.
“Beaches, fish and chips, and ice cream go so well together that it would have to be a structure to show these off, our menu is decided upon by the day’s catch so we wanted the new site to have the same high quality.”
Harbour ward member on the city council, Nathan Morrison, said: “It’s fantastic to see something finally happening with a location that has been standing derelict for so long.
“While Union Square is good, the great views of the North Sea from the beachfront in my opinion makes it a much better location, and I’m happy restaurants like the Hornblower are interested in taking their business to the beach.”
