A major fire, which was sparked after a candle was left unattended, has caused severe damage to an Aberdeen flat.
Thirty firefighters were called out to deal with the blaze, which started in the bedroom of a second-floor flat on Elmfield Avenue, earlier tonight.
The occupants of the flat were alerted to the fire when their smoke alarm went off, and they called the emergency services shortly after 6.35pm.
Crews managed to stop the fire from spreading throughout the rest of the building, and managed to extinguish it within an hour.
Six appliances and a height vehicle from Central, Altens and North Anderson Drive were all involved in battling the blaze.
The road has also been closed due to safety concerns.
The bedroom was left severely damaged as a result of the fire, and the rest of the flat was badly damaged by smoke.
Speaking earlier, Gordon Riddell – station manager at Central, who was in charge of the scene – said the situation could have been a lot worse.
He said: “This is a timely reminder to people that candles should not be placed next to soft furnishings, should be held in non-combustible containers and should not be left unattended.
“Thankfully in this instance, the occupants had working smoke detectors which resulted in no casualties.
“If anyone has any concerns about their own smoke detectors, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service can provide free smoke detectors and can carry out a home safety visit.”
