£500,000 boost for Provost Skene’s House

An historic Aberdeen house will receive around £500,000 for upgrades as part of the controversial £107million Marischal Square project.

Council chiefs are now to meet with Historic Scotland to discuss the funding for the 16th century Provost Skene’s House – with bosses saying it will be the “focal point” of the development.

It comes after objectors raised fears about the development’s impact on the 16th century landmark at the heart of the former St Nicholas House site.

Two office buildings, a hotel, and seven restaurants and bars are to be part of the Marischal Square project.

Council finance convener Willie Young said he was looking for the public’s opinions on what to do with the cash injection.

He said: “What we want to do is make Provost Skene’s House the focal point of Marischal Square.

“It’s the most important building of the development due to its historic nature.”

Stephen Turner, regional director in Scotland for developers Muse, said: “Marischal Square will be a keystone of the vision of the council’s city centre masterplan proposals providing a new civic space for Aberdeen and creating an enhanced setting for both Provost Skene’s House and Marischal College.”
