The A90 at Hatton was closed in both directions due to the incident.
The collision included an HGV lorry and a car, less than a mile south of the village of Hatton in Aberdeenshire.
Police received the call at 2.45pm, and were joined by fire and ambulance units.
The damage to the lorry
By the time fire fighters arrived two people had been self-rescued from the vehicles.
However one person remained physically trapped within the car involved.
Firefighters worked to stabilise the car and used cutters, spreaders and a ram to free the trapped driver.
The driver was successfully freed from the vehicle
The casualty was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries.
A police spokeswoman said: “We advise motorists to avoid the crash area, just outside of Hatton, while teams clear the road.”
The second crash on the A90
Less than five minutes after police were called to the collision, a separate call came in regarding a crash between a motorbike and a car.
The incident occurred at about 2.55pm near Hatton.
Emergency services were in attendance at the scene.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We receive a call about a collision between a car and a lorry on the A90 one mile north of Hatton just before 3pm.
“One male has been taken to hospital.”
