A war hero, believed to be the oldest Scottish clan chief, has thanked the hundreds of well-wishers who sent him kind words on his 101st birthday.
Captain Alwyne Farquharson, the 16th laird of Invercauld, marked the occasion on Friday.
The captain, who was awarded the Military Cross for his role in the Normandy Landings, is honorary vice-president of the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games, and last year received a standing ovation when he arrived at the Ballater Highland Games for his 71st year as chieftain of the games.
He now lives in Norfolk and usually makes the journey up to Aberdeenshire every year for a number of engagements in the north-east, including the annual gathering at Braemar, home of Braemar Castle, the seat of Clan Farquharson.
This weekend, the captain recorded a special online message of thanks to all those who wished him a happy 101st birthday.
He said: “I wanted to give you an enormous thank you for all the wonderful messages you sent me on the occasion of my 101st birthday.
“It has taken me about half an hour to visually read all the wonderful messages, and listen to the tunes you have composed to me, and all the splendid greetings.
“We live in very difficult times. This is a pivotal moment with this wretched virus, and we must stick together, and the clan spirit will help us through that.
“I hope that in time it won’t be long until this virus is over and we can get together, but in the meantime I would like to encourage you all to keep the flag flying.”
