Diving into a warm pool while the sun beats down around you conjures up daydreams of lazy days in much warmer climes.
But north-east residents did not have to hop on a plane to feel like they were on holiday when Stonehaven Open Air Pool opened for its 80th season at the weekend.
Scores of people queued up to take a dip in the Olympic-sized pool – which is heated to 29C – on Saturday.
At the event, Aberdeenshire Provost Jill Webster and the Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire Carol Kinghorn met with 83-year-old George Swapp, who was at the ceremony when the pool, which was unheated at the time, opened in June 1934.
It was not just locals and visitors who used the attraction but also soldiers – who used it for recreation and showers – during World War II.
Elma McMenemy, of the Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Pool, said: “It was an absolutely brilliant day on Saturday.
“The temperature of the pool was 29C whereas the temperature of the Mediterranean is struggling to reach 19C at the moment.
“But I think what people are realising is that it is fun to come swimming even when the weather is not perfect.
“The pool will be open everyday now until September 7, with longer opening hours during the school holidays.”
The group have a range of activities such as midnight swims, aqua ceilidhs and inflatable fun planned to attract visitors of all ages in the summer months.
