A soldier based at Fort George fell asleep while driving from Redford Barracks in Edinburgh and collided with two other vehicles near Kincraig.
Scott White, 28, who has since left the Army and now works as a lorry mechanic, escaped a driving ban when he admitted careless driving at Inverness Sheriff Court yesterday.
He was originally charged with dangerous driving but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.
Sheriff Margaret Neilson heard White started his journey in a convoy of lorries and army trucks at 9.15 am. on October 2 last year.
Around two and a half hours later, his truck drifted across the carriageway and collided with a lorry and an oncoming car, the court was told.
No-one was injured.
Solicitor Alison Foggo said White, of Burma Court, Inverness, required his licence for his new job.
Sheriff Neilson fined him £500 and endorsed his licence with eight points.
