An 84-year-old driver crashed at a notorious Highland blackspot – despite travelling at just 10mph.
David Strachan had misjudged the turn and collided with a northbound vehicle on the Berriedae Braes section of the A9.
The incident prompted Sheriff Andrew Berry to brand the stretch as one which “leaves no margin for error”.
The 84-year old admitted a charge of careless driving on August 14, but was admonished.
Wick Sheriff Court was told that both vehicles were travelling slowly, about 10mphm while negotiating the notorious hairpin bend.
Fiscal Fraser Matheson said that Strachan, of Durham Road in Edinburgh, had misjudged the bend and his Volkswagen Golf collided with the northbound car.
He then over-corrected and hit a safety barrier.
The sheriff noted that Strachan had since decided to give up driving and would not seek to renew his licence in January.
