A Uist teenager was fined £300 after being convicted of an assault on an Inverness man two years ago.
Ryan Simpson, a 19-year-old from Tigharry, North Uist, had denied striking Stephen Murray on the body with a bottle on November 23, 2014 whilst acting with another person and repeatedly punching and kicking him on the head and body.
The incident happened in the early hours of the morning in Carnarc Crescent, Inverness.
Simpson, formerly from Dingwall, lodged a special defence of self-defence, claiming he had been struck first by Mr Murray who came out of a house holding a frying pan.
In evidence Mr Murray, a 29 year-old carpet fitter said he was asleep at his girlfriend’s house when he was wakened by two youths shouting outside calling his girlfriend names.
He told Sheriff Margaret Neilson he shouted at them but they threatened to damage his car which was parked in the driveway.
He added: “I ran outside and he Simpson was swinging a vodka bottle about at me. It caught me on the arm below my elbow. I was thrown over and fell to the ground and was then kicked and punched.”
Giving evidence on his own behalf, Simpson admitted he and his pal were “pretty drunk” and been giving cheek and abuse.
But he claimed the bottle broke when he was struck on the head by the frying pan.
Simpson was found guilty after a trial.
