Lerwick man facing jail after being caught with cannabis in his home

A man from Lerwick has been warned that he could be sent to jail after being found with cannabis in his home potentially worth £2,700.

Joseph Irvine, of Rudda Court, admitted at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Tuesday to possessing the class B drug with intent to supply at his home address on 10 March.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said police searched the 21 year old’s home and found 162.5 grams of cannabis.

In the form it was found in, the drugs would have been worth around £960. However, broken down into its smallest sellable amounts, it could be valued at £2,700, Mackenzie said.

Defence agent Michael Chapman said his client paid £500 for the drugs not long before police searched his house.

Sheriff Philip Mann called for social work reports due to the “serious” nature of the offence and warned Irvine that there was a “distinct possibility” of a custodial sentence.

The case was adjourned for reports until 28 February.
